Heidi Anderson is our Parish Nurse. A Parish Nurse plays an important role in the church's mission of restoring wholeness to all people. Heidi works with the pastoral staff and members of the congregation to achieve the highest level of wellness possible for the members of Still Waters Church. A total ministry involves healing broken spirits, bodies, minds and communities. The practice of Parish Nursing emphasizes the spiritual needs of the congregation, while addressing healthy lifestyles, disease prevention, health care accessibility, as well as the development and leadership of a health ministry.
Our Parish Nurse focuses on healing faith communities by:
Educating members about the relationship between lifestyle, attitude, faith and well being. Heidi develops and coordinates educational programs as well as provides written materials on prevention and disease management. Articles that link spiritual, mental and physical health are written for church publications.
Counseling members individually or in groups about issues involving chronic disease, caregiving, management of medical regimen, medication monitoring, nutrition and weight management, and end of life issues. Encouragement is given during times of crisis and despair, through presence and support of faith beliefs.
Referring members to community health services and health care agencies. Developing community contacts in order to secure resources and services to meet the needs of our congregation. Heidi acts as a liason to the most appropriate, effective, and efficient resource for each individual.
Facilitating programs and leadership within the congregation to mobilize gifts, talents and energies of the members to multiply ministries. Volunteers are organized and trained to participate in visitation ministries, program planning and implementation, and support groups. With the help of a health committee, Heidi empowers the congregation to take responsibility for programs and services that address the whole person.
Still Waters Church values the health and healing of the whole person. The Parish Nurse plays an leadership role in raising up Health Ministers and Ministries in the Church. We offer many small groups that empower our belief of keeping the body, mind and spirit healthy. We also provide written materials in a Health Lending Library and current articles on prevention and disease management.
Here are some of the parish nurse/health ministry small groups:
Elizabeth Ministry is designed to support women and their families during the joys, challenges and sorrows of the childbearing years. Volunteers become Elizabeth Ministers in the areas of which they have experienced. These areas include pregnancy, birth, miscarriage, infant or child death, crisis or special needs, adoption, fertility, and infertility. The support comes in the form of visits, phone calls, cards, prayers, and resources. To become an Elizabeth Minister, a short training is necessary. As a representative from our faith community, you would provide a link between our church and our homes. Elizabeth Ministers are not counselors, rather people who are willing to share their presence, stories, and experience in the hope that these will encourage another woman and her family.
Grief Support As a member of Still Waters Church, you are a member of our community. When someone in our family loses a loved one, we realize that, although people grieve in different ways, they want to know someone cares about them and the loss they have experienced. Through our grief support, loved ones, adults and children, receive letters from Still Waters as a way of reaching out in a time of need. The Parish Nurse offers a pre-holiday class/workshop designed to help people cope with feelings they may encounter at that time of year. She can also connect you with grief support in the community, both individually and in a group setting.
Heart Health Ministry The first Sunday of every month, the Parish Nurse and another Registered Nurse offer blood pressure screening and smoking cessation information to the parishioners. Information and counseling is available to help lower blood pressure by making healthy lifestyle changes. Each year in May,the Still Waters Family organizes a group and participates in the American Heart Association Heart Walk to raise awareness and money for heart disease and stroke. Still Waters Church has an Automated Electronic Defibrillator in the Narthex. Every 2 years we offer CPR and AED training to our members. The Red Cross holds semi-annual blood drives at Still Waters. Our drives are in February and August.
Nurturing Needles is a group of people interested in sharing the spirit through needlework!! If you like to knit, crochet, embroider, or do any kind of needlework, you are invited to join us on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:00 for Nurturing Needles. All skill levels are welcome. Please call Glennis Ziegelbauer @ 644-6102 if you are interested in helping.
Visitation Ministry The Visitation Ministry is an outreach effort to provide support to our church families who are in need of companionship or short term custodial help. A Visitation Minister would choose to help in the areas they feel comfortable or with something they enjoy doing. This could involve transportation, a few hours of respite care, a meal, running an errand, doing a chore, sending a card, or a companionship visit in the home or hospital. This ministry requires a short training. Many find joy and reward in sharing their special gifts. We encourage those who would like to nourish their spirit through the help and support of a member of their church family, to contact the Parish Nurse if interested in joining this ministry.
Exercise One way Still Waters Church helps you to achieve balance of body, mind and spirit, is to provide holistic exercise to the parishioners. Thoughtout the year we offer different types of exercise classes like "Walking with Jesus" or PiYo.
