white fragility

Robin Diangelo

Wednesdays | 7:00 pm on Zoom

Beginning June 24th

Pastor Lori and Pastor Bridget will lead an in-depth 5-week study based on the book, White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard For White People To Talk About Racism, by antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo.

In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’"(Claudia Rankine).

The book explores the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially. White fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

Books will be available for purchase at $12.00. This book is also available for your Kindle and Audible if you have a subscription.

the road to character

by david brooks

This 5-week book study will begin Tuesday, May 26th at 10:00 am via Zoom. We will be reading The Road to Character by David Brooks.

In his thought-provoking look at ten noteworthy individuals, Brooks, the longtime New York Times columnist and author of bestselling works The Social Animal and Bobos in Paradise, Brooks looks hard at what we mean by “character.” Is it an innate quality, brought to the surface by particular experiences? Is it something built over time? And can it endure in a culture that values consumption and material gratification over inner fulfillment? The central question of this book is how to not only do good but be good. How to live a life of depth and meaning over success and achievement. One way to begin the journey is by asking yourself one simple, yet difficult, question, “Am I living for my résumé or my eulogy?”

Please sign up for this study so that we will be able to email you the link to join the Zoom book study group.
