Still Waters Community U.M.C. Youth Ministry Philosophy
 
Still Waters Community United Methodist Church youth ministry program exists to find the lost, release the captive, and develop disciples of Jesus. We will accomplish this by engaging youth in an affirming environment in which they feel safe and cared for, and to provide youth an outlet to think critically, ask deep questions, experience God in powerful ways, and to serve others.
 
We believe that tomorrow’s church leaders are being shaped today and so we have the follow expectations for our Director of Youth and Family Ministries:
 
  1. Live a Spiritually Disciplined Life
Only those on a spiritual journey can lead others on a spiritual journey.
    1. Corporate worship
    2. Personal prayer
    3. Bible Study
    4. Christian Fellowship
    5. Service
    6. Accountability to ministry staff team
  1. Nurture Faith and Discipleship
Disciple youth and encourage them to share their faith.
    1. Provide weekly senior high small group or discipleship Bible study
    2. Provide bi-monthly middle school small group or Bible study
    3. Work with the tide pool coordinator through supervision, insight and resources to insure an excellent children’s program
    4. Partner with Senior Pastor in teaching confirmation (Pastors will provide denominational teaching)
    5. Leadership development
    6. Find local mission projects for youth
  1. Outreach
Build relationships with youth and parents and work to draw them closer to God and the church through personal contact.
    1. Provide an atmosphere where youth feel welcomed and valued
    2. Reach out to at least four youth each week (2JH, 2 SH, active & inactive)
-Schedule a regular time for each week
-Make initial visits 30 minutes maximum
-Boundaries (wide open spaces)
-Spend time in prayer before and after
                  c.   Contact one parent each week
                  d.  Attend four school events each month
                  e.  Visible presence in worship
                  f.    Organize and supervise annual short term mission trip for youth      
  1. Fellowship
Provide opportunities for youth and adults to meet together to share lives and to develop relationships.
    1. Provide one monthly fellowship event for middle school and high school youth
    2. Encourage the invitation of friends
  1. Administration
    1. Develop and maintain youth database ( name, address, phone, email)
    2. Medical forms
    3. Monthly youth newsletter, draft website material
    4. Bulletin and worship announcements
    5. Complete monthly report on visitation
    6. Fundraising
    7. Proper accounting of youth funds
  2. Youth Ministry Council
Develop a team of 5-9 adult leaders and youth who will work together to develop and maintain a Christ centered Youth Ministry Plan that works to fulfill the youth ministry mission statement and achieve youth ministry goals.
    1. Meet monthly with youth ministry council for dreaming, planning, and evaluating.
    2. Meet personally with individual youth ministry council members
    3. Recruit new members
    4. Plan youth events AT LEAST six months in advance
    5. Partner with adults and parents to share ownership of the program             
  1. Music Ministry
    1. Proficiency playing either guitar or piano
    2. Provide music support to for children’s Christmas program and VBS
    3. Help to develop youth music ministry (i.e. children’s choir)
 
How do we measure effectiveness? These seven expectations are not a mere check list to be accomplished; they are a gateway to a dynamic Youth Ministry program. Effectiveness is seen in results. As it states in Matthew 7:20, “Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.”

Youth Council
Meetings are the Second Sunday of each month at Still Waters from 12:00-1:00 pm.
 
We believe that everyone has been blessed with different gifts. These gifts should be used to create a well-rounded Youth Ministry. 
Therefore, we will meet each month for visioning, planning, and evaluating.
