When Jesus asked the disciples “Who do you say I am?” we recognize this is a first question for each of us! Who you you say Jesus is? Sometimes our answers to who Jesus or who God is gets challenged as we go through life. Sometimes we have to reformulate and re-think based on ages, stages, trials, and joys of life. This week we’ll be challenged to ask the question of who Jesus and who God is for you at this time in your life.
“Fear is one of the most prevalent and haunting human emotions.” - Magrey Devega
Some say that the command to “Fear not” appears in Scripture about 365 times- almost the nujmber of times for each day of the year. Fear can control us, overpower us, and take over. Let’s go under the surface, and ask, “Why are you afraid?’” In exploring the answer to this question that Jesus poses, we’ll look at how God can help us to address our fears, rather than avoid them.
Anxiety is something we all deal with, and some studies are showing levels of anxiety have risen significantly post-pandemic. What makes you anxious? What keeps you up at night? How can our relationship with God and Jesus help us to combat our worries and anxiety? We’ll explore the answers to these and other questions!
There are some people for whom we cannot wait to love! They are easy to get along with, full of grace, and we just enjoy caring for them. Others- not so much! The challenge to love becomes very real when the difficult, annoying, hurtful people walk into our lives. What is love anyway? Where do boundaries get drawn? As we continue our journey to the cross, we’ll consider the question of loving like Jesus.
At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, as the disciples began to follow Jesus, Jesus asked an important question, “What are you looking for?” Sometimes we aren’t even aware of what we’re looking for. Devega says, “In the broadest sense, this last question is one off the most prominent and most important in the human experience.” This is a question that goes deeper than seeking for comfort and happiness, and gets to questions of ultimate meaning and purpose.
